Australia is home to some vibrant Vietnamese communities, from Footscray and Richmond’s Victoria Street in Melbourne to Sydney’s Cabramatta, and it’s nationwide Vietnamese population is approaching 200,000. Vietnamese food is known for its focus on fresh ingredients and minimal use of oil, with popular dishes including beef pho soup, Vietnamese pork rolls (banh mi), sugarcane prawns and fresh spring rolls. Northern Vietnamese is known for more delicate, salty flavours, while Central Vietname is famed for the intricate dishes of former imperial city Hue, and the spicy and sweet dishes of Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) and the south.
