German food and meats is as natural a pairing as… well, Germans and beer. Yes, this is the country that has brought us many a memorable sausage, from bratwurst to the original frankfurter and lesser-known weisswurst (white sausage) and smoked knackwurst. Other popular meat dishes include sauerbraten ¬ (picked pot roast), pork knuckle (schweinshaxe) and maultaschen, a meat-filled German ravioli. Not all is ‘fleische’, of course, with the pasta-like spatzle gaining in popularity at Australian tables, while picklings of gherkins and onions have been popular ever since German settlers established their strong base in Adelaide and the nearby Barossa.
